Twice a year I dutifully append a new shopping list to my iPhone. One is for fall-winter apparel, the other is for–you guessed it–spring and summer. These lists are composed over many months, with inspiration flowing in from a variety of sources – the street, the web, print, music videos, international runways and, most importantly – my imagination.
If your fashion divining rod bends toward ‘safe’, you may want to pass on reading this guide. What follows is crafted for early adopters: those who thirst for–and find–the next new thing well before the masses are tuned in. As such, some of the items may be a little tricky (but not impossible) to acquire because they haven’t yet hit the mainstream.

Palazzo pants; gauchos; high-waisted and wide-legged pants: regardless of your height, they’ll all look great billowing atop super-chunky platform shoes, juxtaposed with a fitted cropped top. As with most things in life, opposites attract and complement each other.
SEXY FITTED OVERALLS, ROMPERS, JUMPERS & BOILER SUITS

CROPPED, CROPPED AND…CROPPED!

You’d be remiss not to have cropped tops, sweaters, and jackets already in your closet. And, they’re here to stay for a while. So, fear not: invest in these garments, as they’ll be in high rotation well into 2015, and beyond.
FULL SKIRTS: HIGH-WAISTED; KNIFE-PLEATED

SHELLAC MANICURES: THINK SORBET-INSPIRED COLOURS

My favourite colours this season are soft mint green and vivid, high-gloss white. These choices are versatile and practical: they don’t restrict my apparel options (neither clashes with pinks/reds). For really adventurous spirits out there, have your nails sharpened into elongated talons. Although they’re not the most practical, they’ll definitely set you apart from the flock!

Shorts, slacks or skirts with a matching cropped top, bandeau top, or shirt. The top and bottom should have exact–matching–patterns. This super-fresh look is adorable, but likely won’t be around for long. I wouldn’t spend too much here, unless it’s for a special occasion.

If you have an Alexander Wang Diego bag, it’s time to sling it over your shoulder. Alternatively, don a backpack – they’ve been on the verge of having a serious fashion moment since late 2010, and their time has come!

Mules can be somewhat matronly. However, for SS 2013 I loved sporting a pair of yellow mules with a pair of light blue Capri Moto Current/Elliot skinny jeans and a sleeveless yellow floral cropped shirt tied at the waist. The ensemble had a retro feel. (OK, I admit, in my mind I was channeling Bridget Bardot.
HIP-BONE = EROGENOUS ZONE!

The Hip-Bone is Back: Dior’s light pink skirt amazed us with a sly cut-out that played ‘peek-a-boo’ with the hip-bone. It’s one of the cheekiest pieces gracing the runways for the season. Just as hip (I had to say it) are Versace and Rodarte. Both featured full skirts sitting squarely on the bone. It’s a look that takes us back to the 1990’s and has some eye-catching staying power, but only on those with the most youthful of frames.

Ear cuffs–last seen in the 1980’s–are re-appearing. They’re an easy accessory update for SS 2014. Fashion Anthropologist doesn’t recommend splurging on them: we view the ear cuff as ephemeral. Furthermore, after giving Nasty Gal’s cuff (pictured above) a test run, it was painfully clear this accessory should be worn for no more than two hours –
. They have an unpleasant tendency to crush sensitive ear cartilage!
11) UNBUTTONED OXFORD SHIRTS.

Stealing your man’s oxford shirt will make for a fun, head-turning bikini cover-up when kicking up a bit of sand on your jaunt to the concession.
