A Book Review By Shannon Thompson:

Every once in a while, you come across a book that really captures your attention. I have a fondness in-particular for biographies. I’m interested in what makes people tick, how they got to where they are, and what they did to succeed in life.

Recently, I came across such a book. Marilyn Wilson’s “Life Outside the Box”. It is a book is full of people who have made their lives mean something, not just to themselves but to others. Marilyn captures the essence of each person, from their humble beginnings to the present day, asking the key questions –  what is your passion, what drives you, and what us your ultimate goal. She draws you into their lives and keeps your attention.

One noteworthy biography included in the book is of Caroline MacGillivray (founder of The Beauty Night Society) which assists women living in dire poverty in Vancouver’s notoriously dangerous drug riddled Downtown East Side. This young woman has done some monumental things for her community and she has been recognized by many for her outstanding achievements. Marilyn gives insight to her deepest thoughts and dreams, how she got to where she is, and what she is all about, not just what she does.

Another is that of Lisa-Marie Mazzucco. A women whose passion was overshadowed in the beginning by her famous husband Raphael Mazzucco.  Raphael is a world famous fashion photographer and artist. However, Lisa-Marie shines and ultimately rises to her own challenges and finds her niche.  She has become world renowned in her own right for her artistic creativity and photography.

I was spoiled Life Outside The Box – includes 10 biographies ! Eloquently written and VERY engaging.  I was burning the midnight oil as soon as I got this wonderful book in my hands. Marilyn R Wilson writes from the heart and  gives the reader insight as to who these people are –  not just what they do. Compassionate and a truly gifted writer, Wilson demonstrates her talents for getting to the heart of each person.

At times I didn’t want to stop reading because she wrote this book in such a way that you could relate to the people, their challenges, their triumphs and defeats. Some of these people are superheroes and widely known, others local hero’s and some wouldn’t consider themselves hero’s at all. The well written biographies make us all smile, and see the hero in each of them.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about the personal achievements of EXTRAORDINARY everyday people. Hopefully, reading the biographies of these amazing individuals will inspire you to live yours.
