Drafted By Shannon Litttle:

The first time I walked into Carlos O’Bryan’s Neighborhood Pub/Kelly O’Bryan’s Neighborhood Restaurant, they were still working on the final touches before the upcoming Opening Day.  I knew right then, that this place was going to be a fabulous new establishment in Kitsilano (Vancouver).

The warm welcome from the staff and Chief Executive Officer/Founder Reg Henry, and the inviting atmosphere of the restaurant, created an environment that immediately made one want to come back.

“Carlos O’Bryan’s is not a Sports Bar or a Craft Beer Pub.  It is simply a great place for people to meet and enjoy great food and have fun.” ~ Reg Henry

In 1987, Reg created the first Kelly O’Bryan’s restaurant in Kelowna, BC.  As he is half Irish, Reg joked that the Irish KNOW how to drink and when they researched Irish names they discovered that ‘Kelly’ was the most popular first name and ‘O’Bryan’s’ was the most popular last name.

Realizing the restaurant is more geared towards families, Reg decided to create Carlos O’Bryan’s Neighborhood Pub in 2005 to complement the restaurant concept, so that adults could have a pub atmosphere to Eat, Drink, and Be Irish.

“The name Carlos O’Bryan’s seemed like a great name for a cousin.” ~ Reg Henry

Most of the establishments are located throughout the Okanagan in the cities of Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, and Kamloops.  Plus they have a Kelly O’Bryan’s in Prince George and a Carlos O’Bryan’s in Nanaimo.

There was a Kelly O’Bryan’s in Surrey for 15 years and when it closed in 2006, Reg always knew that as a franchise they would like to return to Vancouver at sometime.

Finally, the opportunity arose, and Kitsilano has proved to be the perfect opportunity for the newest expansion!

“I love Vancouver and I hope Vancouver loves us as much!!!” ~ Reg Henry

When I asked Reg how he would describe his restaurants/pubs to the Vancouver clientele he simply stated, “our food is very simple, very blue collar, but it’s the FUN we’re out after.”

At lunch they appeal to office workers, secretaries, and Blue Collar workers.  During the dinner hour the crowd ranges in age from 35-70 where friends and families meet before a show or an event.  Then from 9pm until midnight they feature ‘Blarney’ where they offer any two appetizers for $12.00.

This along with their 6 pack shooters that get served on a BIG GREEN SHAMROCK for $19.95 makes them very appealing to the younger generation getting ready for a night on the town or having a get together with friends.

Even though I am about ¼ Irish and my name could not be more Irish, I had to ask Reg and Chris Pooli, Kitsilano’s General Manager, to clarify what ‘Blarney’ meant.

I wish I could print their first response, however, I will keep it clean and say that it means the “gift of gab”, to “talk about anything” or perhaps this is a LITTLE closer to the truth, it’s “not the whole truth”.

No matter which definition you choose, ‘Blarney’ is all about having a great time, with great people and they certainly do their best to please their customers by having some incredible deals.

A special birthday tradition at Carlos O’Bryan’s/Kelly O’Bryan’s is that if you come in on the day of your birthday, you can spell your name correctly, prove you have a friend and have proof that it is your birthday they will buy you lunch (up to $15) before 4pm, or dinner (up to $20) after 4pm.

The feeling of family and comfort is definitely apparent from the moment you walk in the door at Carlos O’Bryan’s/Kelly O’Bryan’s and that is undoubtedly one of the key reasons why this franchise has been so successful.

“Our strength is our staff and management…our most valuable assets. We want to continue to give them opportunities to grow personally and financially with us!   And in the short term we want to develop a more comprehensive training and development program for both staff and management.” ~ Reg Henry

The franchise is all about what it can do for itself, its employees, and its very VALUED customers, as well as being avid community and charity supporters donating a dollar for every birthday dinner they give away.  This amounts to over $35,000 per year and since 2007 the total is over $340,000.

Just recently they started a trust fund through the Rotary Club of Kelowna that will keep their donations in perpetuity and continue to support the Food Banks and Salvation Armies across British Columbia.

Many locations also do Burger and Beer nights for groups and charities as Fund Raisers.

Giving back to their communities is something that they strongly believe in and they are currently working with some active members of the Vancouver community and look forward to becoming involved with Charities and organizations in their new neighbourhood.

Chris Pooli, Kitsilano’s new General Manager (G.M.) is so pleased with the opportunity of running the new Carlos O’Bryan’s Pub/Kelly O’Bryan’s Restaurant in Vancouver.  Originally from Kamloops, Chris worked his way through the ranks from server to Manager starting back in 2006.

In September 2013, Chris left the organization but returned in November 2014, when Reg called and asked if he would like to become G.M. of the Kitsilano franchise.

Chris has always dreamed and aspired to open and own his own pub/restaurant and is thrilled to make his new home in the beautiful city of Vancouver.

The Kitsilano Pub/Restaurant has a patio and is open from 11am to 1am, 7 days a week, 363 days a year.

The only days they are closed are Christmas Day and the third Sunday in September when they close all the locations and transport everyone to one location for a staff baseball tournament and staff awards dinner.

Carlos O’Bryan’s/Kelly O’Bryan’s have a very dynamic menu which includes signature appies and many other menu selections.

Their drink menus are printed about 3 or 4 times per year and “most of the drinks are staff created and new ones will be continuously added to the menu.” ~ Reg Henry

Now it would be bereft of me not to mention the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day, being that Kelly O’Bryan’s and Carlos O’Bryan’s is indeed an IRISH PUB!

As can be expected they will be celebrating in the typical IRISH fashion.

On this special day they will also be giving away a GUINNESS 2 DOOR MINI-FRIDGE.

EVERYBODY’S IRISH ON ST. PATTY’S DAY!!! Tuesday, March 17th 2015

The Management and staff are excited to be located in beautiful Kitsilano, on the corner of Burrard and 7th Avenue.

There are big screen TV’s throughout the establishment, a pool table on the Pub side, comfortable booths, beautiful bar, high tables and stools and low tables with chairs making this an environment accessible for everyone.

Every time I have entered Carlos O’Bryan’s/Kelly O’Bryan’s I have been greeted by warm friendly smiles, had great food and drinks and I have always left knowing that I would return because it truly is a place that promotes FUN!  Who doesn’t want a LITTLE more FUN in their lives?
