I met Steely Springham purely by accident, but I am so glad I did. She had a huge impact on my early journey as a writer. I was interviewing her former boss – Jon Paul Holt of Avant Garde – in a coffee shop across the street from his busy hair salon. He had forgotten a CD of images to accompany my article, so I connected with Steely who was the receptionist at the time to pick it up. She looked at me and said, “I want to be a part of your magazine.”

The only opening at the time was interviewing and writing articles, but as a former singer who wrote her own lyrics, she stepped into the position with ease. When it came time for the magazine to release our annual print collectible, she volunteered to organize and run our first ever launch party in the beautiful Jennifer Kostuik Gallery in Yaletown. It never would have happened without her hard work and vision. I am happy to say the evening ROCKED!

Over our time working together, we became friends. I loved her positive, can-do attitude.
She always had my back and pushed me to reach for new heights, to believe I could achieve anything I set my mind to. When she decided to step down and embrace a new life path that was calling her – fitness competitor, personal trainer and more – I had a hard time letting her go and missed her tremendously.

While we don’t get a lot of time to catch up, I could not be more proud of all she is accomplishing. She has found her life purpose and is empowering those whose lives she touches to do the same.

8Q Spotlight Steely Springham

What is your current career(s) – paid and unpaid?

I am Steely Springham, an “Inspirational Conversationalist” & public speaker. It is a deep rooted passion & unpaid career for the moment. However I am currently parlaying that into increased public speaking events to stages across Canada and around the world, along with the development of my radio, television and book ideas.

I am manager for Activebody Nutrition in Yaletown (downtown Vancouver BC) a premier supplement store chain and am one of their blog writers for the website. I am a confidence coach & stage posing and mental prep coach for competitors in the Bodybuilding, Figure, Physique & Bikini competitions. Along with that I am an ACE certified Personal Trainer with a select clientele.

Can you share an interesting thing (or two) about your journey to reach this moment?

Wow … to narrow it down to a thing or two… hmmmmmm?…From music to fitness, there have been so many incredibly interesting things along this journey. The twists and turns all leading to the exact moment of right place, right time, even in the midst of the most challenging of circumstances or the most seemingly desperate of times. I think though certainly the most interesting thing about my journey thus far are ‘the people’ I have met or encountered and the amazing nuggets of information or the most profound discoveries I have been fortunate to have experienced through other people, all of which leads to self-discovery and growth and empowerment.

I get inspired by people and then I am able to inspire others. This vital exchange of ‘feed and be fed’ serves tremendous purpose for me as I continue to forge forward on my journey. The details of the many fantastical and powerful and painful encounters that all worked to serve me along this journey will be in my future book.

What 3 things would you like people to know about you to give them a sense of who you really are?

  1. I am just like everyone else. I have challenges, good days and bad days and just because I don’t spill them all over social media or rant with anger or sadness doesn’t mean I don’t feel these things. I choose positive & optimism.
  2. I am forever the OPTIMIST! I focus on solutions instead of problems and CHOOSE to live in optimism as much as I possibly can. I have found the more you do it (like anything else) the better you get at it and it just becomes who you are! Besides you end up laughing a lot more and that alone makes for better days each and every day.
  3. No! I didn’t always look like this!!!! I shed old beliefs along with the pounds & negative self-talk or what I call ‘verbage’. I then diligently worked on myself mentally, emotionally, spiritually (ya … #jesusismyhomeboy) as well as physically. I choose to work on all areas and pray daily.

Highest moment so far?

I have many great moments, too many to share in this short interview. Winning my first competition at age 41 beating out gals half my age or stepping on the national stage for the first time in only two years of competing is also a high moment. Back when I was doing music having my first TOP 10 single and hearing it on the radio for the first time was, at that time, certainly a high moment that was short lived. There are so many others.

But I have to say the moment I discovered that the very thing I have always wanted to do in my life which was to inspire others to become all they can be, as I so desperately wanted to do for myself, I am NOW DOING. I was certain that it was going to be through my songwriting and my music career. But when that ended after 12 years, I felt like I had failed and I floundered desperately chasing the frantic search for happiness.

I turned to fitness and competing as a source of therapy I suppose, only to discover that my plan B was really my plan A. I AM NOW doing that very thing I dreamt of doing and that is inspire people (especially women) to become fear~less in their life and discover for themselves that they already are who they want to become. Just as I have. So far that and all that has come since has been and continues to be my highest moments ~ daily.

What are you working on right now? In the next 6 months?

I am currently working on creating more public speaking opportunities as an “Inspirational Conversationalist” through writing & podcasting for PowHERhouse Magazine & blogging for Activebody.ca. As this and my audience continues to grow, I will continue my confidence coaching business as well as. The goal then is parlaying it all into a radio/television platform to enable me to reach a greater far widespread and diverse audience of women of all ages. Young females will be a focus in the near future. Along with that I will be preparing to compete in the summer of 2016 at the CBBF Canadian National Championships with the goal of winning my IFBB Pro Card in Figure and Fitness. representing Canada on the international competition stages.

Who and/or what inspires you?

People inspire me! Underdogs inspire me! Fearful people allowing themselves to become fear~less in their lives inspire me. Its not the ‘what’ people do that inspires me, it’s the “how did they get there?” That inspires me! The Story! The ‘WHY’! Their journey! The challenges and the triumphs of each and every one of us that inspires me.

Sadly our world is instant pictures that makes it appear that instantly someone is who they are! But its the journey of a person that sculpts and creates who they become. I do believe wholeheartedly ‘you are already who you want to be’. But its in the journey of ones self-discovery, in finding that out about a person and the sharing of their story that makes for juicy, delicious inspiration that will absolutely affect others. I want more of that and I believe others do too. Of course there are many famous people that inspire me but its more about how they got there, not that they are there.

How do you personally define success?

I used to define success as “goals you accomplishment” or “fame you acquire” or “achievements you conquer” or the ever false illusion of the ‘attainment of money’. All can seemingly feel like success in your life on the surface, but can still leave you with feeling empty and dissatisfied. I believe without a more intrinsic inner focus, it’s an endless chasing of temporary external fixes to fill a much deeper void. At least it was for me.

Personal success, to me, is found at the very foundation of your being fueled by your passion. It’s the ability and power of your decision every day. No matter what is happening in that day, you are passionately living from a place of ‘inner peace and joy you most certainly have the power to create. I believe when you discover this power you are successful at living a full life regardless of your circumstances. By striving for this goal, you then allow for the optimal circumstances to facilitate the creation all of the others things mentioned above, which will take on new meaning and feel more fulfilling because you are already fulfilled without them.

If you could collaborate with anyone on a project who would it be and why?

I would love the opportunity to collaborate with Oprah. She has always been a driving force of empowerment for women. I believe this will be an incredible collaboration. Yes I said ‘will’, for the goal to do so is on my vision board and it will come to fruition in the future. There needs to be a revival of females coming together and lifting each other, empowering each other that aligns with my vision of (#empower2empower & #lift2lift). I believe that together she and I could do that. Not to mention I could learn so much from her and I also believe that she could learn from me. Bold-Big-Dream! Yes indeed! I will continue to ‘fear~less~ly’ pursue this collaboration and create this opportunity. I am looking forward to it Oprah!
