Tal Thompson came into my world through a friend back in 2008 or 2009 when I co-owned a local magazine. A few years previously, he had stepped into the world of entrepreneurship by launching a line of personally designed fitness wear offered under the brand name Sweat. We quickly found common ground. The loss of our mothers had put both of us on a new career path.

Over the coming years, our friendship grew as we continued to break new ground. Thompson supported my journey through booking advertising and offering great business advice. He even introduced me to Geir Ness, who ended up being included in my first book. I respected his knowledge, focus and confidence as he faced the many challenges that entrepreneurship inevitably brought and I offered what support I could in return.

In 2013, when facing the arrival of a significant birthday, Thompson decided to set a new challenge for himself. He began to train in earnest to compete in the Sandra Wickham Fall Classic Body Building and Physique Competition. By the time that birthday arrived, he was physically in the best shape he had ever been in and proud of what he had accomplished. This journey also sparked a new career direction, to help others realize their fitness goals. Now a certified personal trainer, Thompson works with a wide variety of clients. In addition to training, he offers a blog featuring healthy recipes to assist clients in reach their goals.  And if you’re on the North Shore, he will come to you.

What is your current career(s)?

Can you share an interesting thing (or two) about your journey to reach this moment?

 I have learned that I cannot live a life trying to satisfy other people. When I found the special life I wanted to lead, I truly became happy. Every day people make major choices about their future based on what others expect. It took many years for me to realize this, but learning has no age limit and it’s never too late to break away and start doing what you want and not what others think you should be doing.

What 3 things would you like people to know about you to give them a sense of who you really are?

 ·      I believe it will be better to look back on my life and say, “I can’t believe I did that,” than to one day look back and say, “I wish I had done that.”

·      I am firm believer in being yourself and not comparing yourself to anyone else.

·      I must have been a Latino in a previous life as I feel a real bond to all things Latino.

Highest moment so far?

In 2007, I launched a line of fitness related clothing. I am proud that it was, and continues to be under a new owner, carried in stores around the world. The line has inspired many to a path of fitness and health. It is a legacy I am thrilled to have created.

What are you working on right now? In the next 6 months?

At this very moment, my spouse is six days out from his first physique competition. My job is to support, inspire and lead him to the stage in the best condition he has ever been in. Over the next six months, I am expanding my healthy recipe blog and continuing to experiment and create healthy versions of popular meals and snacks. Who and/or what inspires you?

My clients inspire me every day. I wake up and go to work to be with people who have chosen to make real, positive changes in their life by using physical fitness. I am honoured to support my clients in their physical fitness path. I get to see tangible results and witness mental and emotional changes as a result of training. The hard work and results achieved by these clients inspires me.

How do you personally define success?

Success is constantly growing and improving, using every opportunity to develop knowledge. Be committed to your life and success will follow.
