Katherine Tessier’s fashion career started out in Quebec, where she eventually launched a line under her name. The first collection came out in October 2015. Although she was a full-time student at Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy, she presented the collection at several events, and festivals, one of those being Vancouver Fashion Week.

How, and when did you get your start in fashion?

I was in my second year of fashion school, and I couldn’t do my internship during the next summer. I decided to start my own business because I didn’t want to wait; I was ready! I launched my first collection on October 2, 2014 [and] I organized my own fashion show.

Do you have a muse?

No, I don’t. My biggest dream is to have Lady Gaga wearing my clothes. If I could, she would be the one!

What type of music are you listening to right now?

Lady Gaga, the only one I can hear every day, and every night! She has [been] my favourite artist since [she released] “Just Dance”! I’m a little monster, and it influences me every day! I try to create clothes with her songs.

Which part of the job as a designer do you love? Which part do you dislike?

I love to research fabrics so much. It is my favourite part of the collection. The first step is to do the sketches of my collection [and] find my fabrics. I love to have my prototypes. I’m so excited when I go to search the prototypes! I’m like a little girl at Disneyland!

The part I hate the most is the pattern making. I don’t do my patterns, and I have two seamstresses because I don’t sew. I know how to sew, but I realized that I cannot do everything for my business!

Which three designers inspire you, and why?

I would probably say Jean-Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, and Betsey Johnson. First, for Jean-Paul Gaultier, I’ve always said he was my husband! You can laugh! I appreciate his work so much, and he is so human; I love his life joy! For Marc Jacobs, I wanted to do my internship with him in New York last summer. I loved his work [when I knew it from] fashion shows, and with his documentary I appreciate him more than ever! He is always there for fashion. Betsey Johnson has a style that I particularly love. I think that when you create, you must have fun! She inspires me with the fact that she creates fun clothes.

What do you love, and dislike about Vancouver?

I love the mountains, and the nature that is everywhere. I didn’t feel like I was in a city; it was calm, and I really loved it! I hated the rain! For Vancouver Fashion Week, I loved everything! I loved the team, I loved the excitement in the air, I loved to be part of [it, but] I hated to not eat! There is no food at Vancouver Fashion Week. I had to eat at 7am, 12pm, and at 11pm. So crazy!

What words of advice would you give to someone starting off in the business that you wish you had been given when you were starting out?

It can be crazy, but trust yourself! People will try to discourage you sometimes. You have to be strong, and know how to count. Money is really important! I didn’t have a lot of a budget when I started, but it didn’t stop me. Don’t be afraid to be rejected by everyone! Don’t be afraid to tell what you have to say! Don’t be afraid to push yourself! Your work has to be the first thing in your life. I live for my work. Believe in yourself! Trust me, people will believe in you, after you believe in yourself.

If your house was burning down which three things would you make sure you took out with you?

I would take out the funeral bookmark of my friend Steven; he died when I was in high school, and I always have the impression he is near me! I would take my cat – it’s a Sphinx, and my handbag with all my cards in it.

Do your parents approve of you being a designer?

Yes! They have always supported me in my fashion career. Since I started fashion school, they knew I loved it, and I wanted to be a fashion designer. My aunt is a fashion designer, and she helped me a lot when I started. My mom almost always comes with me to different events; she came with me to Vancouver. They tell me every time how much they are proud of me!

If you were not a fashion designer, what other job would you like to be doing?

Seriously, I never thought about this question. Since I was a little girl, I knew that I wanted to have my own business. I think I would have an aesthetic salon. If I had the capacity to be a veterinarian, it would be my second choice! My father has a farm, so I grew up on a farm.

What is the one fashion trend you wish had never happened?

What a big question! I really don’t like to see socks with sandals. Even with high heels, I think it’s really not beautiful. White socks are the worst accessories ever with open high heels!
