“I caused quite the stir showing up as a curvy bearded queen,” says Katy Hairy, about her appearance at Vancouver Fashion Week SS16. She’s one of Vancouver’s most fabulous Drag Queens, and she certainly did turn heads at the event. From her sky-high heels to her colourful hair and makeup, it’s hard to miss Katy in a crowd. She talked to Metro Living Zine for a Vancouver Fashion Week exclusive below.

How and when did you get your start as a Drag Queen?

It has been about 1.5 years and it has been a whirlwind of hair and glitter that I wouldn’t change for the world!

Do you have a muse?

Can I say myself (insert painting nails emoji)??

What type of music are you listening to right now?

Anything that fits into the “Diva” category. I.e.: Cher, Celine, Whitney, Beyonce, Adele, Nina Simone, Diana Ross, Gwen Stefani, Christina, Shakira…I could go on for days.

What part of being a Drag Queen do you love? Which part do you dislike?

I love being the centre of attention. Duh! And I hate the pain I’m in the next day from my cinched waist and high heels!

Which three Drag Queens inspire you and why?

1. Raven

2. Kim Chi

3. Grace Towers

Why? Because they’re from the Gods and are forces to be reckoned with!

What do you love about Vancouver and what do you dislike about Vancouver?

I absolutely love the sense of family there is within the Drag/Gay/Queer community, but it drives me bonkers how friggen expensive it is here!

What words of advice would you give to someone starting off in the business that you wish you had been given when you were starting out?

If someone isn’t telling you “you’re doing wrong!” then you aren’t doing drag! Be you, do what you love, and people will love you for it!

If your house was burning down what three things would you make sure you took out with you?

1. Corset

2. Eyelashes

3. GLITTTTTER!

Do your parents approve of you being a Drag Queen?

Lets just say we haven’t had that convo yet.

If you were not a Drag Queen what other job would you like to be doing?

Oh, I wish this was my only job! I’m a Hairstylist/M.U.A. by day, and Drag Queen by night.

What is the one fashion trend you wish had never happened?

Wedged Heels! Unless you’re going to a garden party, or it is laundry day, you won’t catch me dead in them.
