At 2016’s Spring-Summer Vancouver Fashion Week, The House of Viviano Sue presented a whimsical, unforgettable collection featuring butterfly masks, and bold black, and white prints. Now, the designer is proud to release “Synthetic Phobia”, which “conveys how a source of fear can be transformed into an object of beauty, and elegance.” There are twenty looks in the entire collection, and each is uniquely edgy, and dark.

Although Viviano did not show the collection at the most recent Vancouver Fashion Week event, he talked to Metro Living Zine in the interview below.

How, and when did you get your start in fashion?

I was inspired to start fashion design after seeing McQueen’s 2009 Fall/Winter show. It was then that I realized this was what I wanted to do. Six years later, I am still following my dreams in fashion design.

Do you have a muse?

No one in particular.

What type of music are you listening to right now?

Mostly pop, and jazz. I’m currently listening to Adele, Sia, and Rihanna.

Which part of the job as a designer do you love? Which part do you dislike?

I like [seeing] progress when I am creating new things. I also like making samples, and seeing how my visions are realized. All designers must worry about the sales though, which I feel limits my creativity.

Which three designers inspire you, and why?

My favourite three are Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Rei Kawakubo. McQueen, and Galliano inspired me to become a designer in the first place. Kawakubo is my favourite because she has created her own unique style [and her] creativity isn’t limited by commercial mindset.

What do you love, and dislike about Vancouver?

It is a beautiful city, the people are very warm, and I was very glad to meet with other creative minds, and media during my last visit. The only thing I dislike is that it is too far from Japan. I’d like to come visit more often, but distance makes it difficult.

What words of advice would you give to someone starting off in the business that you wish you had been given when you were starting out?

Be prepared to work very hard. Have some thick skin. Never question yourself, or lose passion for what you are doing, or you may as well just give up before you even begin.

If your house was burning down what three things would you make sure you took out with you?

I would take my feather cape, my black Christian Louboutin shoes, and my Alexander Wang purse my boyfriend bought me.

Do your parents approve of you being a designer?

At first, just my mom was supportive. My father became supportive after seeing my graduation show.

If you were not a fashion designer what other job would you like to be doing?

I would be a flower artist, or interior designer.

What is the one fashion trend you wish had never happened?

I’m not a fan of minimalist trends. I feel that fashion should be more bold, and exiting.
