In continuing with the concept of the first nation-wide event last October at the McCord Museum in Montreal, this symposium is designed to bring together scholars who focus on fashion-related topics in universities and museums, and for professionals in the creative industries in Canada. The symposium will encourage and facilitate discussions and collaborations on fashion-related projects. The structure of the symposium is purposefully different from a formal conference to allow more time for discussion and networking. The event will be open to the public, but official participants are requested to register. Instead of a formal (paper or slideshow) presentation, participants will be asked to introduce themselves and present their fashion-related work in 10 minutes max.

This year, the symposium will include a guest lecture, workshops, and a special events organized by the Museum of Vancouver and open to the public. Please pass this invitation on to anyone who may be interested!

A highlight of the symposium at the Museum of Vancouver will be a fashion show entitled Fashion Avant-Garde: Now And Then. It will juxtapose old and new, and high tech and low tech from the past and today. The event will feature the work of Vancouver designers, who are active in diverse areas of contemporary fashion (eco fashion, wearable technology, Indigenous fashion, wearable art, fashion technology, haute couture)—and contrast their garments with historical examples from the collection of Vancouver fashion historian Ivan Sayers. The designers and Ivan Sayers will present commentary during the fashion show.
